New server, who dis?

So, this is the first blog from my new website.

Some of you may be wondering, however, what’s new given this is the same domain. Well, let me tell you.

The Content Management System (CMS) is still WordPress, so that hasn’t changed. What has changed, however, is where this is hosted.

The old website lived on a dedicated server from OVH, and was costing me around £120 per month (incl. license costs) to run just for this website and a couple of others.

This new webserver isn’t actually a server at all, but it’s a mini PC living in my homelab running Docker. You’re reading this blog through a technology called Cloudflare Tunnel, which allows me to expose certain predefined services through Cloudflare’s ecosystem.

In theory, this means faster response times, quicker handling of requests and an easier time of deploying updates and upgrades. It also comes with the benefit of not having to pay for license costs or colocation of a server.

My plan is to have more content on this blog in the future showcasing some of the technologies I use in my homelab and some of the projects that I’ll be doing.

The good news, however, is that I do not intend for there to be any ads of any kind on this blog – No Google AdSense, nothing at all. While I may still make use of affiliate links, I am not going to place any banner ads or other image-based ads here.

I also plan to hopefully release podcasts and videos on YouTube as I get started and going with these technologies and projects. I’ll post updates here as I get going.

There will also be gaming videos on my YouTube channel as and when I get some time to sit down and record some videos.
